Operating Your Safe

Operating Your Safe

This page contains helpful instructions for operating safes.  It is important to keep in mind that most safe manufacturers do NOT make locks!  The safe lock is often bought from a lock manufacturer and installed at the factory.

The Safe Place stocks mechanical, electronic, and biometric locks.  Electronic locks are superior to mechanical dial locks.  Most electronic locks are considered Group I because they protect against manipulation, unlike standard mechanical dial locks.  You can however buy a Group II mechanical dial lock, but you can NOT change the combination of a mechanical dial, whereas an electronic lock combination can be customized for the owner.  BE CAREFUL!! Customizing or changing the combination to your safe can, however reduce the level of security if you choose an obvious number!!  DO NOT make your safe easy for others to open!  Choose a number relevant to you so it's easy for you to remember, but don't choose your street address, PO Box number, Phone number, or anything similar.

It is important to understand that each manufacturer has their own requirements, for instance some electronic locks allow you to store more than one combination. Another example is: some electronic locks require 2 batteries.

The combination to your safe is very important!! Keep it in a Safe Place!!  Decide keep you combination hidden from other, but in a place you can find it if you ever forget your combination.  If you have an electronic lock you MUST change the combination as soon as it is installed.  All electronic locks are programmed with the same combination, usually the combination is 1-2-3-4-5-6.  If you give your combination to a neighbor or friend in an emergency consider changing it immediately after the emergency.
